VMWare FAQ |
How does VMWare work? |
VMWare slices up a high-performance server into several entirely separate entities, or virtual machines, running on a base OS. These virtual machines act completely independent of one another, and can be different from the base OS and each other. Should one virtual machine crash, it has no effect on the other instances. Each virtual machine has its own private memory, disk space, network space, and operating system. |
Why is VMWare better than VPS? |
With VMWare, your resources are truly yours, that's why it's called a virtual DEDICATED server (VDS) instead of VPS. There's no sharing--the slice you get is yours exclusively.
Unlike VPS systems like Virtuozzo, which operate at the software level, VMWare operates at the HARDWARE LEVEL by conducting a full hardware emulation, for a truly isolated, stable and secure environment with higher performance. In addition, you can install any OS on a VMWare machine. |
How do I control my virtual server? |
You are given full, "true" root access to you server. You can use Windows Remote Desktop if you have Windows OS installed or use SSH if you have Linux OS installed. |
Can I reboot my machine? |
Yes, you can reboot your virtual server whenever and as often as the need arises. This will have no effect on any other clients. |
How many others will I share the server with? |
We are very conservative when it comes to determining whether another client can be successfully added to a machine, especially when compared to other providers. We will first take a look at current cpu usage, i/o times, and swap activity. The exact number of clients on a system varies, since some users receive more traffic than others. But in short, absolutely no more than 4 clients ever share a machine, which is very likely the best ratio in the industry. Which is another reason why our virtual servers will outperform anyone else's. |

I'm interested in building a virtual appliance. How can I get started? |

Setting up your server
How do I access my server? |
Once we've installed your OS, you can immediately log in as root and get started. If you have Linux OS installed, simply open a secure shell (ssh) to your server to do this. If you are connecting from a Windows-based machine, you'll want to use an ssh client like PuTTY. PuTTY.exe is a free download available at:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
If you have Windows OS installed, simply use Windows Remote Desktop.

How soon can you set up my server? |
VMWare Virtual Dedicated Servers can be turned up for you the very same day!
Who handles system administration? |
After the operating system is installed, it is up to the client to take care of additional configuration and administration. Support services however are available, usually at the rate of $50/hour. If you run into problems initally setting up your server, we will provide some assistance free of charge. |
How can I switch from another hosting company without downtime? |
Once your servers are online, you can upload copies of your current sites. Then all you'll need to do is change the DNS. |
What if I'm upgrading from virtual to dedicated? |
To allow for a graceful cutover, we'll keep your old site up until you configure the new server. |
Can I host more than one web site on a single IP? |
Definitely. This is strongly encouraged and now the norm. |
Can I host more than one HTTPS (secure SSL) site on a single IP? |
No. (This is an exception to the general rule that multiple web sites be hosted on one IP address.) |
Network Monitoring |
How is the network monitored? |
Servers and network infrastructure are continually monitored through the use of network monitoring software that immediately alerts us around-the-clock via on-screen notifications, email, and SMS. |
